What is a glasgow salad

American Coleslaw homemade at turbo speed

The coleslaw is a cabbage salad that is served as a side dish in the USA with every meal. As an avid traveler to America, I like to develop recipes that taste like being on vacation in the USA, so my fingers itched to bring the Coleslaw to the table at home. I've had the recipe for quite a while and a reader recently asked me where my Coleslaw recipe went. I have no idea how it disappeared, but now I'll just write it down again.

There are two variants for me: One Original recipe for Coleslaw and additionally one lighter version. For the light coleslaw, I simply swap sour cream and cream for (soy) yoghurt. It works just as well and tastes at least as fresh and juicy.

As fast as this coleslaw is ready, you can use it as a Last-minute salad for the buffet conjure up. And of course you can have this coleslaw even without the turbo mixer do. You can see how to prepare it below.

Original American Coleslaw recipe

  • ½ pointed cabbage, diced (about 500 g without stalk)
  • 2-3 large carrots, coarse pieces (about 220 g peeled)
  • 1 tbsp sour cream
  • 100 ml of cream
(Sour cream and cream are interchangeable for the same weight of yoghurt, vegans use unsweetened soy yoghurt)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 pinch of pepper
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp vinegar (preferably balsamic vinegar)
  • 1 small onion, quartered
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • Sprinkle lemon
  • 1 teaspoon herbs

The turbo-fast and easy one
Preparation of Coleslaw in the Thermomix®:

Put all the ingredients in the mixing bowl and chop to the required size for a few seconds on speed 4 using the spatula. That's it! Turbo fast, right?

This amount is enough for 4 people as a side dish. For larger quantities, please prepare one after the other, as more than half a pointed cabbage with the other ingredients does not fit in the mixing bowl!

The Coleslaw also tastes really delicious in flatbread or in a wrap as well as a side dish for grilling. You can print out the recipe here:

  • 500 g pointed cabbage without stalk, roughly diced
  • 220 g peeled carrots, coarse pieces
  • 1 tbsp sour cream
  • 100 ml cream or yogurt
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 pinch of pepper
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp vinegar (balsamic vinegar)
  • 1 small onion peeled and quartered
  • 1 teaspoon sugar or honey
  • 1 squeeze of lemon
  • 1 teaspoon herbs

  • Put all the ingredients in the mixing bowl and chop into the desired size for a few seconds on speed 4 using the spatula.

For larger quantities, please make the recipe in several steps. It doesn't fit more than half a head of cabbage in the mixing bowl. ⇒ If you don't have a Thermomix® use another multi-chopper or use a knife to chop all ingredients into fine pieces / strips.

Preparation of Coleslaw without Thermomix®

Who does not have a Thermomix® simply use another multi-chopper *, a coarse grater or a sharp knife to cut the vegetables into fine strips. Personally, I like it very much when the Coleslaw is not chopped up too much, but rather cut into fine strips. That looks a lot nicer! The multi-shredder is faster.

The ingredients for the sauce are then simply whisked together beforehand in the salad bowl and later mixed in with the vegetable strips.

And one more tip

It doesn't always have to be fresh herbs. Without a doubt, these taste more intense and aromatic. But when the herb garden has just been grazed (from me or the deer), then I like to take a frozen herbal mixture (organic). I then take a tablespoon of this so that the taste fits again.

From now on: No barbecue party without ... our Coleslaw!
