How do I catch a catfish

Catfish fishing - big game hunting on the river bank

Catfish anglers can experience great moments on the large rivers. In the north, catfish are at home in Weser, Elbe and Oder.

It reaches lengths of more than 2.50 meters, weights over 100 kilos and can develop incredible strength: the catfish, also known as catfish in many places. The largest domestic predatory fish has a rustic shape: the flat skull tapers to a huge mouth, which is lined with six distinctive whiskers. The tiny eyes actually do not match the massive, streamlined body, which is surrounded by a continuous fin border up to the tail fin. The bites on the fishing rod are brutal, the drill on the heavy equipment is a real show of strength for the hobby fisherman - and that is exactly what makes the appeal for many Petri-disciples.

Hotspots along the major rivers

The rivers of the Rhine, Main, Neckar, Moselle and also Havel are known as classic catfish hotspots. However, the animals can now also be found frequently in northern German waters such as the Elbe, Weser and Oder rivers. Deep river spots - ideally with shelters or pools that offer protection from the current - are their refuge. From there they hunt prey fish and other edible things - such as worms.

Heavy and stable equipment is a must

A catfish drill demands a lot from the material: only rods with a casting weight of at least 300 grams should be used.

Very few anglers have a boat, which is why the most common angling method is angling from the shore. The rod must be robust and stable. Models with a casting weight between 300 and 600 grams and a length of three meters are ideal. Ocean rods in the 20 to 30 pound class are also suitable, provided they are long enough. The castors used should be just as robust: stationary castors of the 5000 or 6000 class are not too large. The reel should hold around 300 meters of braided line with a load capacity of at least 50 kilograms. Anyone who can throw a multiplier reel without getting tangled is also well served with a medium-sized model. A large fish net, sturdy rod holders, which ensure an upright position of the fishing rod, and a landing glove should also be part of the basic equipment.

Catfish assembly with underwater float

Can be fished from the bank and also from a boat: the catfish bottom assembly with underwater float.

One of the most frequent assemblies for stationary catfish angling is the bait presentation with the underwater float and the ground lead. To do this, a running boom is first pulled onto the main line with a lead (weighing between 150 and 250 grams, depending on the current, pose and bait). This is followed by a rubber bead that is supposed to protect the knot of the high-performance vortex. The leader itself is between 1.50 and 2 meters long; a monofilament leader line with a thickness of 1 to 1.2 millimeters is suitable.

If you fish with a bundle of dewworms (around 10 to 20 worms) or scraps of fish, there is a catfish hook size 6/0 to 10/0 at the end. For bait fish such as bream, carp, roach or perch, a tandem hook system must be attached to the end.

Using rubber stoppers or stopper knots, an underwater float is placed about 15 centimeters in front of the bait. The pose is intended to give the bait buoyancy so that it does not sag, but rather plays seductively in the current above the bottom. The strength of the float depends on the weight of the bait and the flow pressure, so you have to try it out here. Experts recommend around 15 grams of load capacity for a bundle of rope worms.

Knock with the catfish wood and landing handle

Catfish angling professionals lure the predatory fish by knocking them with a catfish stick. The wood has roughly the shape of an ax handle, at its end there is a plate-shaped thickening. The broad end is used to hit the surface of the water so that air bubbles are pressed under the surface of the water. If the bubbles burst when you pull it out, there is a knocking noise, to which the catfish feel magically attracted. If a catfish has finally bitten and did not say goodbye to the fight, it is best to land the animal by hand. To do this, put on a landing glove, grab the prey firmly by the lower jaw and pull it out of the water. The thumb and ball of the hand lie on the teeth of the lower jaw.
