IV. Stays abroad as part of a doctorate / final thesis in Japan

Many graduates are looking for opportunities to do this internationally as part of their doctorate or thesis. We have put together an excerpt from the numerous possibilities for this on the following pages.

1. DIJ scholarship program

The German Institute for Japanese Studies Tokyo (DIJ), an institute of the Max Weber Foundation for German Humanities Institutes abroad, awards scholarships to promote young academics as part of its tasks.
The DIJ promotes young academics by awarding doctoral scholarships.

Who can apply?
The scholarship is primarily aimed at people who have graduated from a German-speaking university or are of German nationality. Applicants must write a dissertation in a field of Japan-related research and provide evidence that their doctoral project is recognized at their home university.

  • Final examination at a scientific university (diploma, master’s examination, state examination, possibly doctorate),
  • good knowledge of English and usually also of Japanese,
  • Academic teacher's opinion,
  • A stay in Japan must be required for the research project.

Research stays abroad as part of the doctorate at a German university or non-university research institution are funded. The research project can be processed at a university, a non-university research institute or an industrial research laboratory.

Scholarship benefits
The scholarship includes the following benefits

  • Health, accident and personal liability insurance benefits
  • a monthly flat rate for research and congress costs

Duration of funding
The duration of the funding is one to six months. The scholarship cannot be extended.

Research projects abroad that are part of a doctorate are funded. The research projects can be carried out at a university, a non-university research institute or in an industrial research laboratory.
Only medical graduates can apply for funding for a medical doctorate under this program.

Scholarship benefits
The scholarship includes the following benefits

  • a monthly grant rate determined by the host country
  • Travel allowance depending on the host country
  • Health, accident and personal liability insurance benefits
  • a monthly flat rate for research and congress costs

Third-party services (scholarships, ongoing salaries, etc.) are appropriately offset against the DAAD scholarship.

Duration of funding
7 to usually 12 months; the individual funding period is determined by a selection committee depending on the project and the work plan.

Funding for more than one year is only possible for doctoral students from German universities who have to carry out long field research or archive phases abroad. Their necessity must be specifically justified. In these cases, the approval is granted for a maximum of 12 months with the option of extension. The extension of the scholarship depends on the successful progress of the work, the competition between applicants and the available financial resources.

5. Annual scholarships for doctoral students for bi-nationally supervised doctorates (DAAD)

The aim of this program is to promote bi-nationally supervised doctoral projects at a university in Germany and its partner university abroad. The prerequisite is an individual agreement between the participating universities, which is concluded on the doctoral project to be supervised.

Who can apply?
Above-average qualified doctoral candidates who are doing their doctorate at a German university can apply.

What is funded?
Research stays at the partner university to prepare a dissertation that is bi-nationally supervised and carried out are funded.
Only medical graduates can apply for funding for a medical doctorate under this program.

The scholarship includes the following benefits

  • a monthly grant rate determined by the host country
  • Travel allowance depending on the host country

6. Konrad Adenauer Foundation

The scholarship is granted with funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Regardless of this, each scholarship holder receives a monthly book allowance. Study stays abroad can be financially supported for up to two semesters. All benefits are granted as non-repayable grants.

We award full scholarships which, in addition to financial support, include the extensive non-material support program for the gifted.
The scholarship is granted with funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. As a rule, a lump sum for research costs i is paid per month. Additional supplements (e.g. family, children) may be granted.

Habilitation funding

The funding period is usually three years. In justified cases, the funding can be extended to a total of five years. Parallel, remunerated work in research and teaching at the university or a non-university research institution is permitted, as long as it does not exceed one third of the regular weekly working hours.

8th GRAFÖG - topping up on state graduate funding (DAAD)

Most of the federal states have enacted regulations to promote young academics and artists. They provide funding for doctoral preparation abroad. In this context, the DAAD can contribute to the funding with a top-up scholarship.

Who can apply?
German graduates in scientific and artistic subjects who, as part of their scholarship, require a stay abroad in order to carry out their work project in accordance with the federal state's graduate, doctoral and young talent promotion laws.

What is funded?

Funding of longer stays abroad by scholarship holders according to the graduate, doctoral and young talent promotion laws of the federal states by the DAAD:
The DAAD can grant German graduates in scientific and artistic subjects who, as part of their scholarship, require a stay abroad of at least 30 days to carry out their work project in accordance with the graduate, doctoral and young talent promotion laws of the federal states, an additional scholarship for this time (funding period of up to 12 months ) grant.

PhD funding for binationally supervised dissertations:
With funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the DAAD also awards top-up scholarships for jointly supervised dissertations by a German and a foreign university professor under special conditions to scholarship holders who are funded in accordance with the graduate promotion laws of the federal states: An annual scholarship is for the purpose of a jointly supervised dissertation to be used according to the conditions of the respective supervision agreement for shorter stays in up to three consecutive years, if this is requested from the beginning.

Scholarship benefits

  • Additional scholarships for the cost of living abroad, namely the difference between the DAAD scholarship rate for the country in question and the standard rate of the scholarship within the framework of the federal state graduate support laws;
  • Travel allowance (one-time);
  • Tuition fees, if they are inevitably and really necessary connection with the work project (not for participation in regular courses).
  • only for doctoral students: a monthly flat rate for research and congress costs;
  • Assumption of the premium for health, accident and personal liability insurance through the group insurance contract of the DAAD, if necessary.

Binationally supervised dissertations: A flat-rate travel allowance is paid for every trip that the supervising German and foreign university professor has made, as documented by receipt.
The monthly scholarship installments are made up of a basic amount and an international contribution differentiated by country or region. The scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students are available for undergraduate students (e.g. Bachelor) and postgraduates in advanced studies (e.g. Master's) as well as for doctoral students funded in graduate programs. The higher rate of doctoral students receive scholarship holders who are expressly funded in direct context with the writing of a scientific doctoral thesis.

Duration of funding
At least 30 days, up to 12 months.
