the Socialist Republic of Vietnam
in the Federal Republic of Germany

1. General information

The visa requirement will be abolished for citizens of the following countries:

Maximum length of stay, including days of arrival and departure

Japan, Russia and Belarus

15 days

Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Laos and Cambodia

30 days

21 days

30 days

Kyrgyzstan 30 days

Chile 90 days

The following requirements must be met:

- the passport is valid for at least six (06) months upon arrival;
- Entry takes place at least thirty (30) days after the last departure from Vietnam; this minimum period does not apply if the last entry took place with a valid visa.

Foreigners still need a visa for Vietnam if they do not meet the requirements mentioned above.

a) Foreign citizens and accompanying children who have their own passport need a valid visa to travel to Vietnam. Accompanying children who are entered in their mother's or father's passport do not require a separate visa.

The embassy is responsible for issuing visas for all foreigners, regardless of their citizenship and their place of residence

b) Visas on arrival are only to be issued for urgent cases. Foreigners must first apply to the Vietnamese immigration department for approval to collect a visa at an international airport in Vietnam.

Since the personal details of all applicants are recorded in the permit, even if they are not traveling together, these personal details cannot easily be protected from misuse. There are still numerous fraudulent "visa on arrival" offers on the Internet for which the consular department of the embassy cannot be held responsible.

In addition, the embassy can neither confirm the authenticity of a visa on arrival nor support holders of such a visa in the event of refusal of entry.Given the high risks associated with Visa on Arrival, we advise against it. Please also inform yourself about the travel advice of the Foreign Office (entry requirements for German citizens).

c) From 01/01/2015, a visa for other purposes than tourism can only be issued if an entry permit or approval number has been obtained from the Vietnamese immigration authorities.Without such authorization, only a tourist visa can be issued.

According to Vietnamese law, there are a total of 20 types of visas, which are classified according to the purpose of the trip. The type of visa issued cannot be changed in Vietnam, but is only possible after the visa holder has left the country. However, the stay can be extended at the Vietnamese immigration office.

Obtaining an entry permit

In order to issue an entry permit, applicants must first contact the person inviting them (a private person or an organization, institution, authority or company) in Vietnam. This person applies for the necessary entry permit for the applicant from the competent authorities in Vietnam. After the approval has been granted, the Vietnamese embassy will be informed by the relevant authorities.
