When did James Bond die?

James Bond actor is dead : Sean Connery has died at the age of 90

Scottish ex-James Bond star Sean Connery has died at the age of 90. This was announced by his family, as the British broadcaster BBC reported on Saturday.

The Scottish actor was best known for his portrayal of James Bond, who first brought the role to the big screen and appeared in seven of the spy thrillers. He was widely regarded as the best actor to have played 007 in the long-running franchise.

The Scot played the British secret agent seven times between 1962 and 1983. However, he took great care not to be tied to this role and gradually developed into a character actor.

Often he was the older teacher or wise mentor, for example in the fantasy film "Highlander" or at the side of Harrison Ford as the father of Indiana Jones. The European audience remembered him especially as William von Baskerville in the film adaptation of the Umberto Eco novel “The Name of the Rose”. His other films included The Hunt for Red October, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and The Rock.

Oscar supporting role in "The Untouchables"

His acting career spanned decades. Connery got his only Oscar in 1988 for a supporting role as an experienced police officer in the gangster film "The Untouchables", this time alongside Kevin Costner. He was also awarded two Bafta prizes and three Golden Globes.

In 2000, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II at Holyrood Palace. Since he was raised to the nobility, he was allowed to call himself Sir Sean.

Since 1975 Connery was married to the French painter Micheline Roquebrune. His first marriage to the Australian actress Diane Cilento (1933-2011) was his son Jason. Although Connery mostly lived in Spain or the Bahamas, he remained closely connected to his Scottish homeland and vehemently advocated the independence of Scotland. (Tsp / dpa)
