Natural home remedies for shoulder pain
Our shoulder is the body's most flexible ball joint. It is surrounded by ligaments and bursa and is mainly supported by the muscles. When we move our shoulder, over 20 different muscles are involved in shoulder movements. In addition to the socket and the shoulder head, the shoulder blade, collarbone, the cervical spine, the thoracic spine and the ribs influence the mobility of the shoulder.
Because of the complex structure of the shoulder, there are many factors that can lead to shoulder pain. Restriction of movement or inflammation of adjacent joints, bursitis, torn cartilage, muscle tendon injuries, arthritis, bone spurs, neck tension, broken shoulder bones, injuries to the upper arm or cervical spine and liver, heart and biliary ailments can cause shoulder pain.
The most common causes of shoulder pain include injuries to the soft tissues, including the muscles, tendons, and ligaments around the shoulder.
In addition to the pain, there is often swelling and restricted mobility of the shoulder and tenderness around the joint.
There are some home remedies and tips available to treat mild shoulder pain naturally. However, if symptoms get worse, a doctor should be consulted.
Gentle massages loosen up the muscles. They reduce painful tension, help reduce swelling and improve blood circulation and mobility.
Depending on what is causing the shoulder pain, gentle transverse frictions (friction) on the muscle tendon transitions, light neck massages or transverse stretching of the surrounding muscles help. Warm olive oil, coconut oil or sesame oil can be used for the massage.
Note: The massage shouldn't hurt. Very painful areas should not be massaged and should be examined by a doctor. Any further pain can irritate the affected structure and intensify inflammatory processes.
Movements keep the shoulder mobile. If the shoulder is spared too much and immobilized, the shoulder capsule will begin to shrink after just a few days. This reduces the mobility of the shoulder.
However, very strenuous activities with the shoulder can exacerbate shoulder pain. Therefore, if you have shoulder pain, rest as much as possible and only perform light, painless movements in order to maintain mobility. This promotes the healing process.
Example exercise 1:
Sit upright on a chair, let your arms hang at your sides and rock back and forth alternately. Turn your upper body slightly. Repeat the exercise 10-30 times depending on the degree of pain.
Example exercise 2:
Stand with your face against a wall or door. Grab the wall with your hands as high as possible and push your chest forward (towards the wall). Remain in this position for 15 seconds and then carefully lower your arms. Repeat the exercise 5-10 times.
In addition, stretches of the neck, arm muscles and chest muscles help to maintain shoulder mobility.
Epsom salt bath
Epsom salt baths have a pain-relieving effect. Epsom salt contains a lot of magnesium, which is absorbed through the skin and relieves tense shoulder muscles. It improves blood circulation and lowers the general level of stress in the body.
For the Epsom salt bath: fill a bathtub with warm water, add 2 cups of Epsom salt and stir well. Soak in the bath for 20 to 25 minutes and repeat 3 times a week.
Ginger is one of the most impressive anti-inflammatory foods. The contained gingerols and shogaols reduce pain and inflammation of all kinds. They soothe the nerves, reduce swelling of inflamed joints and reduce muscle pain. Ginger also promotes blood circulation and the healing process of damaged structures.
Ginger can be drunk as a tea or mixed in with various ingredients. For the ginger tea: put 1 teaspoon of grated ginger in a cup of hot, boiled water, cover and let steep for 10 minutes. Drink the tea 2 to 3 times a day.
Turmeric contains curcumin, which is particularly good at relieving pain. Curcumin has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects and relieves swelling and pain. The anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin can be compared to the drugs ibuprofen, hydrocortisone and phenylbutazone.
To use turmeric: mix 2 tablespoons of turmeric powder with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil to form a paste. Rub the paste on the sore muscles and let it dry. Then rinse with warm water. Repeat the application twice a day until the pain is gone.
To promote the healing process, briefly boil 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder in 1 cup of almond milk. Remove from heat and sweeten with honey to taste. Drink the mixture 2 times a day.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar brings the body's pH back into balance. This flushes inflammatory toxins out of the body and speeds up the healing process. Apple cider vinegar is also anti-inflammatory and helps reduce the pain and inflammatory processes in the body.
Simply put 1 tablespoon of unfiltered organic apple cider vinegar in a glass with water and drink 2 times a day for 1 week.

For the use of barley grass: put 1 heaped teaspoon of barley grass powder in a glass with water and drink 2 to 3 times a day for 2 weeks.
More tips for shoulder pain:
- If there is swelling in the shoulder, place a few pillows under the affected area to help the swelling.
- Upright posture. As a result, the shoulder is relieved and the muscle tendon junctions are less irritated.
- Perform gentle stretching exercises on the muscles around the shoulder every day.
- Drink warm lemon water several times a day. As a result, mineral deposits on the shoulder are better removed and pain is reduced. Mix the juice of ½ lemon with a glass of warm water and drink.
