It's fun to see your points go up - kind of a confirmation of what you've achieved. However, when I started digging deeper into some of the cool reporting tools ToDoist had offered, I hit a brick wall. These are ToDoist premium functions that are only offered to premium members.
So I used ToDoist for free for a while. But I kept stumbling against things that I wanted to and couldn't do. Email reminders. Add notes to the task. Things that would really increase the value of ToDoist as a time management and task management solution enormously. So one day this year I decided to bite the bullet and pay the really cheap annual fee of $ 29 so that I could finally access these features.
In this article I want to describe the premium features of ToDoist and share whether the features are worth the price or not.
A review of ToDoist's premium features
Honestly, I wasn't really sure if it was worth going over my hard-earned $ 29, but the price was low enough to take a risk. Not sure what I would gain from it, I took the plunge and started exploring a little more at ToDoist. This is by no means a paid review - I am a full paying customer so you can be 100% sure that the opinions offered below are of their own volition.
Add reminders to tasks
The first thing I wanted to find out was the reminder feature. This is something I've wanted to use since I started using the service and was really frustrated that it wasn't accessible. You can Find a reminder tool, by right-clicking a task and clicking Reminders from the drop-down menu.
You can simply send an email or SMS reminder of this task at any time of your choosing. The beauty of ToDoist, of course, is that you don't have to remember the exact date. If you know there is a must-do thing on Tuesday at 5:00 PM, you can enter the reminder date as "Tuesday 4:00 PM".
ToDoist automatically calculates that you mean approaching Tuesday at 4 p.m., determines the correct date and sets up the reminder you requested.
Add notes to tasks
Another premium luxury - Assignment sheet . That's nothing minor as it's the main reason I wanted to upgrade to Premium and it hasn't let me down. The ability to jot down notes next to a task is so easy, but it's important to me because I prefer to take notes here while I'm working on a specific task - right in the to-do list I oversee the task self.
Bonus - you can also attach pictures or other files to the notes. Do you need a diagram as part of the assignment? No problem - upload the file and save it with the to-do notes.
It might seem silly to have 10 or fewer projects running, and a short list of tasks for each, but imagine that you are managing 20 or 30 projects, each with their own sub-categories of tasks and associated notes, files, reminders. and everything else. The last thing you have to do is build it all from scratch. ToDoist Premium also includes a daily backup of all your active projects.
Backups are saved as text files that you can download and check out anytime, or you can save them to your own secure device if that makes you feel better. You can also force ToDoist to create a full backup of your tasks at any time by clicking "Create a new backup".
Exporting calendars and templates
Another benefit of a Premium account is the ability to extend your task management projects to your calendar applications. In particular, you can use ToDoist to export your tasks as an iCalendar feed, which, according to ToDoist, works with Google Calendar and Outlook, among other things.
All you need to do is copy the iCalendar feed url from your account and use this link to access your data from the other applications.
You can also export certain projects that you have set up particularly well as "project templates". This saves the formatting, task configurations, and more for each project in a text-based "template" that you can later import as you create new projects.
This can save a lot of time, especially if you tend to do the same projects over and over again. Instead of starting from scratch every time, just start the new project, import the project template, and most of the work is done. Just start getting things done. That saves time.
Send email tasks to your projects
One pleasant surprise I just stumbled upon while researching the premium features for this article is the fact that you can set up a project with the "Email Tasks To This Project" ability. You can find this feature by clicking the settings for each project.
This allows you to assign specific email addresses that can send new tasks to be added to the project. ToDoist gives you a specific email address for each project, so every time you email a new task to that email address, you will automatically add the task. It's one of the fastest, easiest ways to update your to-do list without ever putting your fingers on a keyboard or even walking near a computer.
Just send the task email from your phone and you are done. You can also add multiple e-mails that are authorized to issue new tasks to the project.
Trends and reports
One of the most important ways to improve your productivity is to keep track of your current productivity levels and trends. ToDoist tracks your productivity for you so you don't have to think about it. The free version of ToDoist shows you a basic overview of your productivity, but to really dive into the trends and reports you need Premium.
It's actually quite surprising how these trends can help you spot patterns in your behavior. You may not have noticed that you are much more productive in the middle of the week than at the beginning or the end. Maybe you have better months than others. Perhaps you are putting way too much effort into one project to the detriment of your other duties.
Any productivity trends that you can access by clicking on your karma score can help you find those inefficiencies or personal behaviors that you just didn't know were there. Data never lies, and when you see your own behavior - or procrastination and laziness - right in front of your eyes, it is very difficult to ignore.
The bottom line is that the premium features and services are worth the annual fee, at least in my case. I can't say that would be true if the cost was much higher, but I can say that the ability to remotely perform email tasks, receive productivity reports, and to-do notes are the three traits that I love most love. The fact that there are other additional features with Premium is just a sauce to me and proof that it was money well spent. So if you're considering upgrading to ToDoist Premium, I hope this review told you if Premium has what you want. If not, why pay? But when it does - you can have these features for less than 8 cents a day.
