In 2006, TVS Motor Company introduced the TVS Apache RTR 160, the first from the Apache series company, which brought a slew of TELEVISIONS with premium motorcycles we know like the Apache series today. The RTR GmbH in Apache was an acronym for "racing throttle response" and the first Apaches bragged about using TVS Motor Company's racing experience to design and develop these bikes so that they can perform well in their respective segments great driving characteristics. Now, more than a decade later, the Apache RTR 160 is getting its first major update, with new styling, new features and a new four-valve engine in the cylinders, and so the name TVS Apache RTR 160 4V.

The new bike is available in both carburetted and fuel-injected variants, and we spend a few hours riding these two variants around the short test track at the TVS Motor Company's facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. It's an all-new bike, yes, and it has TV racing DNA as well, tracing its roots to TVS Motor Company's very own six-time Indian ”National Motorcycle Racing Championship (INMRC) winning motorcycle, the RTR 165 prototype. With a new 159.5 cc, four-valve, single-cylinder engine that makes 16.6 PS on the fuel-injected version (16.3 PS on the carburetted variant), and 14.8 Nm of maximum torque, the new TVS Apache RTR 160 4V is the highest Performance figures in this segment. But does it have all the qualities to be the winner in this highly competitive segment?

It has the look
The face of the new Apache RTR 160 4V looks familiar. In fact, you might be fooled into believing it is the Apache RTR 200 4V since it is almost identical. The new RTR 160 has the same headlights with LED indicator lights, the same front fenders, the same bonnet and identical tank and tank extensions. The “double barrel” style exhaust is also borrowed from the Apache RTR 200 4V, and the all-digital instrument panel is packed with features, including a lap-timer and gear indicator on the RTR 160 4V with electronic fuel injection (EFI).

It looks similar to the RTR 200, but not quite, it now comes down to the “Trot Horse” TVS logo on the tank, a one-piece seat, new side panels finished in silver with 'Apache' branding on it, and a new one Rear, with a split headband tapering off to the LED taillight. Build quality is top notch, and if it's a benchmark motorcycles set off the TV stable that's too late, it has to fit in and finish. And the new RTR 160 4V is no different, the rights from the color quality, gap dimensions, weld seams in the switchgear housing, everything looks and feels high quality.
The new Apache RTR 160 4V has smooth and refined performance
It has the power
Our first time with the Apache RTR 160 4V is with the carburetted variant, and immediately the refinement levels of the four-valve engine are evident. The engine is smooth, and picks up speed without a hint of harshness. In a way, this is a departure from the gruff ’Apache character of previous models, but it's a welcome change, really. The company claims 0-60 km / h pay in 4.73 seconds for the carburetted version, and the speeds build up quickly up to 80 km / h. It's only a 160cc single, after all, so the top end takes some time to reach, but that is, even on the tight and small TELEVISION test track, we saw speeds of up to 118 mph on the Speedometer before it was time to brake hard at the finish line. The five-speed gearbox is precise and there is no room for complaint here, although personally I prefer a few more ’click’ changes on the gear, rather than soft and comfortable.
The RTR 160 4V with EFI is the slightly more powerful variant, at least on paper, but it takes a little longer to reach 60 km / h (4.8 seconds) and it is also in the 0-100 km / h acceleration time carburetted version that feels faster and stronger. The EFI variant, though, feels more refined, with more linear power delivery, and at city speeds, it's this version that's bound to feel a little smoother and more relaxed in putting power on the wheels. The engine has ram-air-assist and, with the oil-cooled combustion chamber, delivers refined power via the speed, with only a slight hint of vibration around the 7500 rpm mark, which disappears again towards 8,000 and 9,000 rpm min.
The TVS Apache RTR 160 4V has excellent handling and driving characteristics
It is a handler!
The chassis is all new on the RTR 160 4V, and the double cradle frame offers excellent high-speed stability and handling. At the corner entering the loop on the TV test track, the RTR 160 confidently drops into the right-hand bend and retains its serenity. Lap after lap, we pushed the bike faster in the loop and there seems no point in losing stability and serenity. The test track is slightly bouncy in places, and the rear did get a bit bouncy at some point, but there is nothing to complain about, really, and at no point did the bike lose its composure or show any signs of losing composure, even when bent over at speeds close to 90 km / h.
Speaking of which, the Apache RTR 160 4V is now ditching the previous twin shock strut configuration, introducing a rear central strut that has been precisely tuned for compression and rebound damping in collaboration with Showa. The bike comes with disc brakes on both ends, with a 270mm petal disc on the front wheel and 200mm disc on the rear axle. A variant with a drum brake at the rear is also available with a slightly thinner 110 section tire at the rear. The wheels are tires with prilipaly tires offering a lot of grip and driving comfort. And yes, the brakes are adequate, even without ABS, and offer safe and confident braking, as we found out during a panic braking experience on the trail.
Excellent build quality, refined engine and great street manners make this one of the best bikes in its segment
The last word
The TVS Apache RTR 160 essentially started the TVS Apache range of motorcycles, and with major updates for 2018, the RTR 160 is now being fully updated to challenge competitors in the 155-160cc premium commuter segment . Prices start at ₹ 81,490 (ex-showroom Delhi) for the basic rear drum brake variant with carburetted engine, the Apache RTR 160 4V certainly offers excellent value for money motorcycle. Updated styling, great fit and workmanship, and a splendid performance and handling package only makes it all the more attractive in this segment, and leaves an even more compelling case for itself.
There's little to complain about in the new Apache RTR 160 4V, and that makes it a healthy package in the premium-s segment, which is also well-packaged contenders with the Suzuki Gixxer, Honda CB Hornet 160R, Bajaj Pulsar NS160 and even the Yamaha FZ-S FI V2.0. The Apache RTR 160 4V has looks, it has the power and it is available in three different variants now almost a ₹ 10,000 price difference for the discerning customer in this segment. Although just a full comparison with the competition, the Apache RTR 160 will strengthen to the test, surely we can say with confidence that the new Apache RTR 160 4V is one of the best bikes in the segment right now, if not the best . We like it!
