In 1087 the Seljuk Sultan Malik Shah had the castle Qal'at Jabar built about 50 km west of Ar-Raqqa. Presumably in 1104 crusaders from the county of Edessa under Baldwin II conquered the place, but could not hold it. In 1146, the eminent Atabeg Imad ad-Din Zengi, who was besieging an insurgent nobleman in the castle, was murdered by a slave outside the walls. Under Zengi's son and successor Nureddin and under Saladin and his successors, Qal'at Jabar was greatly expanded. Burned bricks were used for this, probably because the conflict with the crusaders made it necessary to build and expand the complex quickly. The castle, which is oval in plan, was secured by two wall rings reinforced with towers. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the place was badly destroyed by the Mongols.
According to tradition, Suleyman Şah, the grandfather of Osman I, the founder of the Ottoman Empire, is buried here. It is thanks to this fact that the place represents a Turkish enclave on Syrian territory: In Art. 9 of the so-called Ankara Treaty of 1921, this was laid down as an agreement between the colonial power France and Turkey. Even after Syria became independent, this right was never questioned.
Today the building rises on a (half) island connected to the mainland by a dam in the Assad reservoir.
